World Telecommunication Day has been celebrated annually on 17 May since 1969, marking the founding of ITU and the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865.
It was instituted by the Plenipotentiary Conference in Malaga-Torremolinos in 1973 as Resolution 46.
This year’s theme of World Telecommunication and Information Day is: “Digital technologies for older persons and healthy ageing”.
The theme emphasizes the critical role of telecommunications/ICTs in assisting individuals in remaining physically, emotionally, and financially healthy, connected, and independent. Supporting healthy aging is also crucial for the economic and health systems’ long-term viability. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) intends to develop activities that will contribute to the UN Decade of Healthy Aging through accelerating digital technologies for older people and healthy aging.
On Tuesday, May 17th, from 13:00 to 14:30, a high-level panel will commemorate the day (CET).
